First established as the ‘Tūrangi Marine Rescue Service’ in 1974 in 1980 it became Tūrangi Marine Rescue service. Its final name change was in 1991 when it became a Coastguard Unit.

The volunteers from the Unit live in and around Tūrangi and are supported by employers and family who actively encourage their participation in Coastguard.

Based at Tokaanu Marina at the southern end of Lake Taupō allows a rapid response to "save lives on the water" and aid vessels that require assistance anywhere on Lake Taupō, Lake Rotoaira and Lake Otamangakau.
