Our Volunteers
Whenever a call for help comes in, our trained Coastguard volunteers race from their ‘day jobs’ to take their place as the crew on one of Coastguard’s 92 rescue vessels located around the country.
Coastguard professional volunteers participate in rigorous and regular training schedules. This training ensure they have the skills and expertise required to handle sometimes bitter and challenging weather or sea conditions, and the issues that might confront them as they reach the scene.
Our volunteers are ordinary people with ordinary day jobs. From accountants to armoury sergeants; firemen to farmers; PAs to policemen: anyone with a desire to make their life count for something.
They do extraordinary work. These people provide over 340,000 hours of their time every year to make sure that our local boaties can enjoy the magnificent waterways that we have. Their time and their efforts mean that you can be secure in the knowledge that, should anything go wrong, Coastguard will be there to help.

We save lives at sea because it's the right thing to do. It's a great feeling to know that you have saved a life, but in typical kiwi fashion, we prefer to remain humble about it.
Saving lives creates a special camaraderie that is unique to those that have experienced it. There is no greater sense of team purpose that exists, when the end goal is to save a life.
Coastguard's training regime equips us with valuable skills that enable us to perform at a professional level, whether it's on the water, in the air or within a communications centre.
Become part of the team and make lifelong friendswith the people you serve alongside.
